Film Festival reflections

Posted on May 2, 2015 at 8:15 PM

My film about Naples was screened last week at the Fort Myers Beach Film Festival. It was objectively speaking the only well and professionally made film in its category. The remainder of the films were amateur attempts at filmmaking, some very abstract, some in very poor taste, in my opinion. But it was really good to be among people who want to be filmmakers and/or are filmmakers all week long. I truly enjoyed the experience. I also got to meet people I never thought of meeting and ride to Fort Myers Beach and back several times over the loveliest of local landscapes.

My Film about Naples

In May of 2004, after not willing to give Florida a chance for nearly a quarter of a century, I discovered Naples. As with many things I do, I now wish that I had not resisted for so long. But then I would not have had the other experiences I collected along the way, right?!

I fell in love with Naples and understood it almost by osmosis, like no other city ever. Not even the one where I was born. There is a certain welcoming quality to Naples as the city, which I have never sensed any place else.

My film was born out of this appreciation for being welcomed. As the script was gestating inside me, the footage was being filmed and, together with my wonderful partner in life and work, we did it! The film has been out on Blu-ray & DVD, enjoying some success and now it is going to be screened at the Fort Myers Beach Film Festival week of Aprill 22-26. WOW! That's all I could say now! And this announcement came the same day as the news about the Silver TELLY Awards for WE TESTIFY: Testimony to Truth, WOW, WOW!
